Corpus Christi – Walking in the Way of the Lord

Sunday, June 19, was a very special day to honor and celebrate the gift of the Holy Eucharist. It was the Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ, also known as Corpus Christi. It is a festive day calling attention to the fact that Christ’s true body and soul, human and divine, is really and substantially present in the Eucharist.

To commemorate this Solemnity, our parish held a Eucharistic procession following the 9 a.m. Mass. Parishioners of all ages, united by a great love for our Lord present in the Eucharist, participated in the procession. This was the first time our parish has had a public Eucharistic procession on the streets around our church.

The procession was an incredibly powerful experience for many of our parishioners. It was a truly sacred, solemn, and joyful event. We participated in a great witness of faith to our community as we followed behind the very Lord Himself present in the Eucharist. Every aspect of this experience was magnified by the reverence promulgated by our priests, the multitude of altar servers, the incense filling the air, the rosary being prayed together, and our voices being lifted in intermittent song.

We stopped along the way, on the school lawn, where an altar had been set up for the occasion. This provided further opportunity to give witness to our love and reverence to our Lord. As we knelt on the grass for prayer and benediction, it was striking to realize that we had indeed brought Christ outside the church doors and into our community, accompanied by our Blessed Mother and the host of angels and saints that always surrounds the Blessed Sacrament. After that stop, we returned to the church and the procession concluded with benediction inside the church.

This was an experience that left me feeling uplifted in so many ways—in closeness to the Lord, being immersed in the graces of the fullness of prayer, and an increased reverence for the Eucharist. I am grateful to have participated in such a beautiful celebration on the Feast of Corpus Christi with my family of faith.

I continue to be uplifted in recollection of this event. I am reminded every time I drive along the roads surrounding our parish that this is holy ground now, for the very Lord Himself came this way.
